Getting ready for your first baby is a wild and sweet ride. Somewhere between building the crib and packing the hospital bag, you might start thinking about newborn photography. Then the questions pile up… When do you book? Where do the photos happen? And what if your baby cries the whole time?
Take a deep breath, mama. You don’t have to have it all figured out yet. This guide walks you through each step, so you can feel calm, ready, and excited for your session.
Hello and welcome! I’m Jillian, an Austin newborn photographer who documents moms and growing families all across Central Texas. Want to remember the tiny yawns, the sleepy snuggles, and those first slow days at home with your baby? Reach out here to book your Austin newborn photography session.

Here’s my best tip: book early. Ideally, reach out before or during your second trimester. That way, your spot is saved, and you have one less thing to think about once baby arrives.
Of course, babies don’t follow a schedule. Some come early, some come late, and a few show up right on time. That’s why we plan around your due date and stay in touch as the big day gets closer.
Lots of families love photos in the first few weeks, when baby is still tiny and curled up. But don’t stress if that window slips by. It’s never too late for newborn photography. In fact, a few extra weeks give baby and your whole family time to settle in. Also, I sometimes still have openings closer to your due date, so always reach out.

Next, think about where you want your session to happen. Most newborn photography takes place in a studio or in your own home. Both are great choices, and each one has its own feel.
When I say studio, I mean a natural light studio. That means no posing, no wraps, and no props. Instead, it’s a cozy space filled with soft window light, so your photos still feel warm and real. In fact, the photos in this post were taken at a rental that looks like a home. Well, it is a home! It’s just not a blank studio space.
An in-home session feels more like real life. We capture baby in the nursery, on the bed where you do late-night feeds, and in your arms on the couch. These photos show your baby’s very first home and all the little details you’ll want to remember.
Honestly, documenting your family at home is my favorite thing ever. Your home is where your story is happening right now. Plus, you don’t have to pack a diaper bag or drive across town with a brand-new baby. Everything you need is right down the hall.

One of the biggest worries I hear from first-time parents is whether their baby will cooperate. What if baby cries the whole time, won’t sleep, or wants to eat five times in two hours? Well, mama, all of that is totally normal. Newborns cry, spit up, and have surprise blowouts, and none of it will ruin your session. Believe it or not, the sweet baby in these photos cried almost the whole time, and the gallery is still full of cozy, tender moments.
That’s because I don’t expect your baby to sit still or follow a plan. Instead, I follow their lead. When they’re fussy, we rock and shush until they settle. When they’re wide awake, we capture those big, curious eyes. And when they drift off to sleep on your chest, that’s pure magic.
I also show up ready with baby wipes, snacks, and any little extras you might need. If you need an extra set of hands, I’m happy to hold your baby while you take a breath or grab some water. After all, you just grew a whole human, and you deserve to feel cared for too.
