Picking a family photographer can feel like a big job. You scroll through page after page of sweet photos, and after a while they all start to look the same. So how do you know who’s right for your crew?
Pretty pictures are only part of the story. The right photographer helps you feel at ease. They know how to handle a toddler meltdown, and they give you photos that look like your real life. As a mama and an Austin family photographer, I want to help you find that person. Here’s what I’d look for if I were in your shoes.
Hello and welcome! I’m Jillian, an Austin family photographer who documents moms and growing families all across Central Texas. Want to remember the pancake mornings, the muddy boots, and all the sweet, messy moments happening with your family this fall? Reach out here to book your Austin family photography session.

First, think about what you want to remember. Maybe it’s your toddler’s wild personality, your big kids laughing together, or the way your whole family fits together in this season of life. Whatever it is, you want photos that feel like you.
Here’s what to look for when choosing a family photographer:
When a photographer checks all three of these boxes, you can feel good knowing your family is in the right hands.

Every photographer has their own style. Some love bright and airy photos. Others like rich, warm tones or moody black and white. There’s no right or wrong here. It just has to fit you.
Start by thinking about your everyday life. Are you a loud, busy crew that’s always on the go? Or are you more of a cozy, stay-in-your-pajamas kind of family? Your photos should match that feeling.
It also helps to save a few images you love. Then look at them side by side. Do you see the same colors or the same mood? That’s your style showing up. Now look for a family photographer whose work has that same feel.
Also, look closely at the editing. A good photographer edits consistently from session to session. If the colors jump all over the place, you won’t know what you’ll get. Steady editing means your gallery will look like the work that made you fall in love in the first place.

Not all family photography looks the same. You’ll hear three words a lot when searching for a family photographer: posed, lifestyle, and documentary.
Posed photography is what most of us grew up with. Everyone looks at the camera and smiles. These photos are lovely, and grandma will probably want one for her wall.
Documentary photography is completely hands-off. Your photographer is a fly on the wall, capturing your family as life happens. No prompts, no direction, just real moments.
Lifestyle photography falls somewhere in the middle, and it’s where I love to be! I might suggest making pancakes, splashing in a creek, or snuggling on the couch. I’ll give you a little direction, but the moments that follow are all yours.
In my sessions, your kids lead the way. If they want to do something safe, we’ll do it. If they need a break, we’ll take one. I’m not here to make everyone sit still and smile. I use little games and prompts to bring out those real giggles and sweet moments.
The goal? Photos that feel like your family, with all the little quirks and moments that make it special.

A portfolio shows a photographer’s best work. That’s great, but it only shows you the highlights. Here’s what to look for as you scroll.
Do you have a big family? Older kids? A kiddo with special needs? See if the photographer has worked with families in a similar season. This shows they’ll know how to keep everyone happy and comfortable.
Look for wide shots that show the setting, along with close-ups of tiny toes and sticky hands. A good gallery tells the whole story of your day.
Ask to see a few full galleries. This is one of the best things you can do. A full gallery shows you what you’ll really get from start to finish.
Do the kids look happy and free? Do the parents look relaxed? If everyone looks stiff, the session probably felt that way too.
A portfolio can tell you a lot, so take your time and look for the photographer whose work feels the most like home.

Once you’ve found a family photographer you love, it’s time to chat. Don’t be shy. A good photographer will be glad to answer your questions. Here are a few I’d ask, along with how I handle each one.
Your answers will tell you a lot about how your session will feel, so take your time and pick the photographer who makes you feel the most at ease.

This is the big one. Even the most talented family photographer in Austin can’t hide it if you don’t feel at ease.
When you’re tense, your smile looks forced, and kids pick up on that fast. When you’re relaxed, everyone loosens up, and that’s when the real giggles and snuggles happen.
That’s why I take time to get to know your family, from your kids favorite songs to the games they love. We build your session around your favorite places and people, and I give kids choices so they feel like they get a say in the fun.
Here’s what Lauren shared after her family’s session:
“Jillian, these turned out so rad!! You captured our crazy family perfectly! We love them”
That’s what I want for every family. So as you search, notice how each photographer makes you feel. If they put you at ease and seem excited to meet your family, you’ve likely found your person.

Choosing a family photographer is about so much more than pretty pictures. It’s about finding someone who makes your family feel at ease and captures the sweet, messy moments you’ll want to hold onto forever.
If you’re looking for an Austin family photographer who loves real moments as much as you do, I’d love to hear from you. Reach out to book your session, and let’s create photos that’ll have your family saying, “Dang, I’m so glad we have these.”
